About Hurstwood

Established in the early 1960s, Hurstwood is a uniquely situated enclave of 124 private residences.  Carved out of the hills and glades just above Seahurst Park, it affords easy access to major thoroughfares, Seahurst Park itself, nearby downtown Seattle and even SEATAC airport while simultaneously providing privacy and even seclusion.   With its singular entry and exit, it affords a bit of extra security as the “bad guys” don’t want to get trapped by the cops.

Your decision to move to Hurstwood was influenced, undoubtedly, by many factors.  One factor you may not know about, but you may have a ‘feeling’ about is somewhere in your bones; namely, you ‘feel’ Hurstwood’s sense of community. It is not often found, yet cherished when it is discovered. It is a common feeling among Hurstwood folks.

Originally named Hurstwood Beach Club, the Articles of Incorporation, its Bylaws, and its Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions (CCRs) were enacted and recorded in May 1961.  The name was officially changed to Hurstwood Community Club in March 1975.  The annual report to the WA Secretary of State as a WA Non-profit Corporation continues to be filed each year.

The CCRs had an absolute life of 20 years.  The CCRs include a clause that says, “shall be binding for a period of twenty years from the date of the filing . . . “  Hence, they are no longer in effect.

Therefore, this neighborhood does not have a homeowner’s association.  It does have Hurstwood Community Club, also known as HCC.  One great advantage is there are no rules to enforce!  Other wonderful attributes are the awesome social events HCC coordinates throughout the year and community-wide communications, which include:

  • Our annual dinner meeting (held in January)

  • Our annual “spruce-up-the-entrance-garden” event (held in early Spring)

  • A Cinco de Mayo taco truck, or something similar (held, well, around the 5th of May)

  • Our annual summer BBQ at Seahurst Park (held the fourth Sunday of July)

  • Our bi-annual OktoberFest party (held, well, in October)

  • Our Christmas Caroling / Spaghetti Dinner party (held a few weeks before December 25th)

  • Inclusion in the HCC roster

  • Printing of occasionally hand-delivered notices

  • Printing and mailing of occasionally USPS-delivered postcards

Accordingly, Hurstwood provides the fertile ground to sustain this sought-after environment.  But, like a farm, the rich earth will not produce, or remain sustainable, without cultivation.

The cultivation in our case is Hurstwood Community Club.  HCC is the plow-to-the-soil that makes our neighborhood a community. Driving and guiding that plow are volunteers.  HCC does not have “officers”.  What we do have is a Coordinator-in-Chief who puts out a call-to-action as each of the aforementioned social events draws near.  That gives HCC residents the opportunity to step forward and help with that particular event.  If no one steps forward, well, then, no event.

HCC funds these events, either in full or in part, from the annual, totally voluntary $20 club fees.  They are collected and paid via electronic invoices.  And, by the way, if you moved in after July 1st of any given year, well, then, it is only $10 for the first year.

Here’s what you can do now:

  • Frequent this website for updates and news you need to know about our neighborhood.

  • Take steps to join Hurstwood.Nextdoor.com

  • Take a moment to go to the Info Form page and submit your information and request an invoice for paying the $20 dues (voluntary). Should you wish not to participate in HCC, just let us know and the Club’s records will be noted.

Thank you very much and, again, welcome!
